Inhibition of monoamineoxidase a (Mao-a) by some herbal medicines
Abstract
In this study, the inhibition effects ofHypericum perforatumL.,Ginkgo bilobaL., Lavandula angustifoliaMiller,Zingiber offici-naleRoscoe,Tilia tomentosaMoench.,Cinnamomum aromaticumJ. Graham, Menthae piperitaL.,Thymus cherlerioidesVis., Portu-laca oleraceaL., Trachystemon orientalis(L.) G. Don, Allium sativumL.,Petroselinum crispumA.W. Hill andSpinacia oleraceaL. were investigated and were used as inhibitors of the activity ofrat liver monoamine oxidase. It was determined that the bestinhibitor plant extract for MAO-A (I50=0.071 mg/ml) was etha-nol extract ofHypericum perforatumL. with 70.15% inhibition.Following ethanol extract ofHypericum perforatumL., the bestinhibition effects were determined in ethanol extract ofSpinaciaoleraceaL. with 0.074 mg/ml of I50value, ethanol extract ofGinkgo biloba with0.075 mg/ml of I50value, ethanol extract ofAllium sativumL. with 0.080 mg/ml of I50value and distilledwater extract ofHypericum perforatumL. with 0.081 mg/ml ofI50values, respectively. In addition, the protein amount of therat liver homogenate is determined. The protein amount of therat liver homogenate was calculated as 0.21 mg/ml.
